Lucky

Lucky started at a very young age of 1.  Lucky had a keen nose and a no-nonsense tenacity.  He was an exceptional K-9 who started his career at Lockland Air Force base.

During Lucky’s career he had 9 handlers and provided protection for Presidential, Vice-Presidential and Congressional visits.  Along with these accomplishments Lucky also was called out to 31 emergency events locally, including various bomb threats.  Fearless and brave, Lucky would sacrifice his life for all.

Lucky served 5 tours of duty between Afghanistan and Kyrgystan.  Saving countless lives and even meeting a girlfriend by the name of Dakota, also a Malinois.  Lucky had it all.

He had already beaten cancer twice and was looking forward to continuing his military career.  On Aug. 20th2011, 5 days before his return home, his handler noticed another tumor.   This battle with cancer would not be won by Lucky; he was put to sleep on Sept. 30th.  He was 10 years young.

Lucky was given the “Heroes Award” from the American Red Cross in 2010.

“This dog was capable of Love, and therefore, had a soul” Said by Chaplain Capt. Craig Nakagawa.

Now at this point in the story you probably are thinking how sad this story is and what a brave dog Lucky was.  What I found interesting about this story was that Lucky’s handler took him to work one last day.  He got to see and be petted by all the people that knew and loved him and some that had never even met him. Then Lucky went for “one last ride” Like I said, to live the life of an ordinary dog would be great, right?  Well, Lucky was not your ordinary dog…however, he spent his last day, in my eyes, the Luckiest dog ever…. enjoying life with no worries.  I prefer to believe that Lucky had no idea of his fate.  Thank you Lucky for all that you did and for all the lives that you saved.  May you Rest in peace.

Kristy wrote: So sorry, your life was cut short, LUCKY. It's so not fair that dog's don't get the chance to live as long as "US" humans when you guys provide UNCONDITIONAL LOVE everyday and always provide forgiveness with humility. You are one brave HERO with my utmost RESPECT...may you rest peacefully...and I hope to meet you someday and shake your paw!
