Ricochet Sends New Message
The famous fundraising dog, Ricochet, is turning a corner. You may know this charming pooch from her talent on a surf board and at collecting staggering amounts of funds for great causes. Ricochet, or "Ricki" as some call her, shunned what her owner thought was her calling as a service dog, and has instead spent her life working to raise money for many causes by using her ability to surf and connect with people and animals on many levels. But lately, Ricki's career has taken a turn. Ricki is teaching kids to be kind, true to themselves, and never, never bully. "Kids need to be true to themselves, not always what others want them to be" is the message that owner Judy hopes she and Ricochet can stress to the children they meet through video and visits. Kids can relate more to dogs than adults, so Judy and Ricochet hope that they can get these important messages through with greater impact.
When Ricochet was born, Judy wanted her to be a service dog. However, Ricochet didn't seem to excel in that job and would not respond to training. Her owner, Judy, was positive that Ricochet had a special gift and a calling, and set out to find what it was. At nine months she was only interested in chasing birds and Judy thought there was more to her and more that she was capable of. Ricochet shone at the Purina surf competition where she took third place on her first try. After that, Judy realized that she had to let Ricki go her own way and not try to control her destiny. It was then that her natural talents surfaced and she began to really help people. “If you don’t have expectations, then things will always exceed your expectations” says Judy.
Ricki is a role model, helping kids learn to be responsible and respect animals. She hopes to turn this philosophy into an anti-bullying campaign that she and Judy can use to help children. Bullying has become a much more serious and intense issue than it may once have been. Ricochet often gets bullied herself being that she is a sweet and submissive dog, so she can help the children see that bullying happens to everyone and that you can’t let it get you down, or change the person you were meant to be.
